Over the years, clinicians across the world have started recognising the importance of body-based work in helping clients deal with the past trauma. And yet, touch is still considered a dangerous path to dread on in therapy. Attuned touch can enhance healing and the therapeutic process, yet, most clinicians receive little to no training on the ethical use of touch in therapy beyond the fear-based and unfounded rhetoric that “touch is a slippery slope to sexual abuse.
Based on her recent article published in the TAJ titled, ‘Touching Practice: an exploration of Runanubandh, touch and contact in psychotherapy’, the facilitator will use multiple case studies to help the participants engage in a deeper dialogue to reflect on the importance of the use of informed and ethical touch in therapy. She will also be introducing the Indian spiritual concept of Runanubandh and Edward Novak’s work on categories of touch and phases of therapeutic work.
