Training in Transactional Analysis

Training in Transactional Analysis is greatly enjoyable and fulfilling at a personal and professional level. Whether you intend to practice in the fields of counselling, psychotherapy, organisations or education, or your quest is to know yourself and others better, you can be assured you will find exceptional training and great support in the student community and UKATA itself.

At the moment we have various opportunities to undertake the TA training, and to reach many levels of competence and qualification.

While the following considerations are valid for all fields of specialisation, for TA Psychotherapy there are additional requirements and options due to the current regulation of this field in the UK.

In addition to formal training, many UKATA training organisations and members offer TA101, events, workshops and seminars to enhance your learning.

There are two bursary schemes available for trainees. These are the UKATA bursary and the EATA bursary. More details can be found here.

Training Pathways

1) TA101

  • This is the real introductory course to TA, covering the core concepts and application of TA theory. Anyone can undertake this course, and it is compulsory for those wishing to train further.

  • The 2-days course is available at many UKATA Registered Training Establishments (RTEs) and offered by several senior qualified members.

  • For information on the places near you offering the 101 and available dates see here.

3) Advanced Training, Diploma and CTA Qualifications

  • Once you have completed your course, you need to accrue practice hours in your field of specialisation.

  • This work and study will prepare you for obtaining qualifications and awards recognised by UKATA and other professional bodies, such as TA Diplomas offered by RTEs and the UKATA TA Diploma. With more study and practice you can become an advanced trainee and obtain the full certification as qualified CTA.

TA Training costs

  • People contemplating a training in Transactional Analysis that leads to UKCP registration should be aware that in addition to the fees charged by a UKATA Registered Training Institute there are other associated costs to be expected.

  • UKCP registration requires a trainee to complete 4 years of personal therapy (40 hours per year) that can be expected to cost in the region of £50-70 per hour depending on the choice of UKCP registered TA psychotherapist.

  • UKCP registration also requires a trainee to receive 1 hour of supervision for every six hours of practice for the 450 hours of practice required for UKCP registration. Furthermore, those trainees pursuing Certified Transactional Analysis qualification will be required to receive 1 hour of supervision for every 5 hours of practice, up to the required 750 hours of practice. Supervision costs are likely to be £60-80 per hour for 1:1 supervision. This may be reduced by joining small group supervision (with a total of 3 trainees and one supervisor) where supervision costs might be shared.

2) TA formal training

  • Training that focusses on all concepts and developments of TA in the various fields of specialisation. It is usually at Post-graduate level.

  • Usually offered at RTEs over 3 or 4 years, courses are geared to obtain various  qualifications.

  • Check the Training Establishment pages for information on their courses and support post-training.

  • Many training centres and senior qualified members offer exam prep and CPD.

4) Become a Trainer and Supervisor

  • Should you want to progress further and become more involved in helping other practitioners to learn and practice effectively, there is more for you to aim for in your TA career.

  • You can choose to become a Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst (TSTA) and so teach and offer supervision.

  • You will start as a Provisional TSTA and enhance your skills and knowledge until you will feel ready to take your final exam
