The Wyvern Institute: Pioneering Inclusive Psychotherapy Training for the Future

12/06/25, 11:00

In the heart of the medieval market town of Chipping Sodbury, just outside Bristol, a quiet but powerful transformation is reshaping the way psychotherapy and counselling are taught. The Wyvern Institute of Psychotherapy and Counselling has, in recent years, emerged as a leading voice in inclusive, accessible therapy education—one that blends academic excellence with deep compassion and adaptability.

What began as a modest, single-group training initiative has, under the leadership of Director Neil Keenan, blossomed into a thriving, multi-cohort institute. With a growing team and a strong vision, The Wyvern Institute now hosts four ongoing training groups and offers a well-established progression pathway—from foundation courses in Transactional Analysis (TA) to a three-year advanced clinical programme. And yet, despite its growth, Wyvern retains the personal, community-driven ethos that first inspired its founding.

Rooted in Values: Inclusion, Accessibility, and Neurodiversity

At the heart of Wyvern’s philosophy lies a firm belief: that psychotherapy training should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their academic history, learning style, or neurotype. This commitment to inclusivity is not just a statement of values but a defining feature of Wyvern’s practice.

“Our aim is to make the world of therapy training open to people who have historically been excluded or overlooked,” explains Neil Keenan. “Whether someone has dyslexia, is visually impaired, or simply learns in a different way, they should still have the opportunity to train as a therapist.”

To this end, Wyvern has implemented a variety of inclusive teaching practices. For students with dyslexia, alternative formats for written assessments are welcomed—including audio submissions or visual presentations. Materials are provided in accessible formats for learners with visual impairments, and additional support is offered to ensure each student can engage with the content fully and comfortably.

This commitment to neurodiversity extends beyond logistical adjustments. It’s woven into the ethos of the institute, where difference is not merely accommodated but valued as a strength. The training culture is one of openness, empathy, and respect for each individual’s unique contributions to the therapeutic field.

A Family-Run Institute with a Big Vision

One of the most distinctive qualities of The Wyvern Institute is its warm, family-led environment. Co-managed by Neil, his wife Anthea, and their daughter Rose, the institute fosters a non-hierarchical and collaborative atmosphere. Students are treated not as numbers, but as individuals—future therapists in the making—supported every step of the way in both personal and professional development.

This familial structure underpins Wyvern’s ability to respond swiftly and sensitively to student needs. The small administrative team is directly involved in day-to-day operations, creating a cohesive learning community where students feel seen, heard, and supported.

Wyvern is also a proud member of the UK Association for Transactional Analysis (UKATA), benefiting from national standards and peer support while contributing actively to the broader TA community. The institute regularly participates in national conferences and sector events, bringing its voice to the forefront of professional dialogue on inclusivity and innovation in therapy education.

An Inspiring Setting for Deep Learning

The Wyvern Institute’s physical setting adds another dimension to its appeal. Located in the picturesque town of Chipping Sodbury, the institute combines historic charm with modern facilities. The building itself offers bright, thoughtfully arranged training spaces, and a rooftop terrace provides panoramic views across the Avon Valley—creating an environment that nurtures reflection, discussion, and personal growth.

This serene setting enhances the learning experience, allowing students to focus deeply on their development, connect with peers, and immerse themselves in the transformational journey of becoming a therapist.

Innovation in Training: Looking Toward the Future

Wyvern’s commitment to innovation is as strong as its respect for tradition. While the institute’s foundational approach has developed from the ideals of the previous, and founding director Peter Flowerdew, rooted in the proven framework of Transactional Analysis, it is constantly evolving to meet the changing demands of the mental health profession.

Plans are currently underway to introduce virtual reality (VR) simulations as a teaching tool—offering students a safe, controlled environment to practice therapeutic skills, client interactions, and crisis responses. This cutting-edge approach will provide practical experience that complements theoretical learning and helps prepare students for real-world scenarios.

Additionally, Wyvern is preparing to launch a suite of specialist workshops, with a focus on neurodiversity, working with young people, and inclusive practice. These short courses will be open to both current trainees and qualified practitioners, further extending Wyvern’s impact within the professional community.

Growing Reach: Serving the Southwest and Beyond

To meet increasing demand, The Wyvern Institute is also expanding geographically. Two new training centres are being developed in Exeterand Wrington, bringing Wyvern’s distinctive training model to a wider audience across England’s West Country. These satellite centres will mirror the values and standards of the Chipping Sodbury base while serving local communities with high-quality, inclusive education.

This expansion is more than logistical growth—it reflects Wyvern’s long-term mission to widen access to psychotherapy training and cultivate a new generation of therapists equipped to serve diverse client populations with skill and empathy.

Community Engagement and Social Impact

Education is only one part of Wyvern’s broader mission. The institute is also committed to making a positive social impact through community outreach, pro bono therapy services, and public education initiatives. Plans are in motion to offer low-cost or free therapy sessions to those in need, as well as awareness-raising events focused on mental health, stigma reduction, and inclusion.

Through these efforts, Wyvern aims not only to train therapists but also to uplift the communities in which those therapists will work.

Conclusion: More Than a Training Centre

As the sun sets over the Avon Valley, casting warm light over the rooftops of Chipping Sodbury, it becomes clear that The Wyvern Institute is more than just a training centre. It is a community, a launchpad for growth, and a beacon of accessibility in a field that increasingly recognizes the value of inclusion.

Whether you’re a prospective student, a qualified practitioner, or someone passionate about mental health, The Wyvern Institute invites you to join a movement where empathy, education, and equity meet.
