About the Event: Wondering About Autism, Silence, and Encounter: A Reflexive Inquiry Beginning Again Perhaps what we are trying to talk about when we talk about autism and institutions is how we manage not to talk about it at all. What interests us unconsciously might be the silences we create, the negative spaces that outline our discomfort with difference more precisely than our words ever could. To wonder about autism is to inevitably wonder about ourselves: What disturbs us in the encounter with a form of being that refuses to mirror our own? The institution—clinical, educational, and cultural—promises to contain such disturbances. However, in containing it, might it not also contain us?
