Stage Two (a) is the second year of the counselling/psychotherapy programme. This year entails an in-depth exploration of various therapeutic approaches within Transactional Analysis (TA). Over eleven weekends during an academic year, participants examine how these approaches understand therapeutic change, diagnosis, and treatment planning while acquiring essential clinical skills for working with clients in therapy.
A significant component of this stage involves starting a voluntary placement as a trainee counsellor, providing practical experience in working with real client issues under the guidance of a supportive clinical supervisor.
Key topics covered include neuroscience and its impact on relationship safety, the client's clinical journey, therapeutic contracting, classical TA concepts such as psychological games and psychopathology, redecision theory focusing on self-actualization, cathexis theory dealing with co-dependency and reparenting, relational TA exploring self-development and unconscious processes, and professional ethics.
Participants are required to complete two x 2500-word essays, engage in reflective discussions with tutors, and have their counselling skills endorsed for placement readiness. This stage aims to foster clinical competency and skill development, with experienced tutors supporting the process.
