In this workshop we will learn about the main considerations when working therapeutically with Adult Adoptees. Due to the recent changes in Government Legislation, therapists are now no longer required to be OFSTED registered to work with Adult Adoptees. This is great news for Clients who have been adopted in that the therapy they can access has been significantly extended for them to have more choice and less waiting lists. However, this is a specialist area which requires knowledge of the differing experiences an adoptee may have had (dependent on when they were adopted i.e. whether it was closed, partially open or open adoption). How the attachment trauma may have resulted in PSTD which may have been misdiagnosed as BPD or another Personality Disorder. Also, the need for the Adoptee to feel they have choice / autonomy & agency in their therapy journey - a differing experience from their original childhood journey.
You will learn about the specificities of working therapeutically with Adult Adoptees, understanding some of the key considerations regarding attachment trauma and be given a basic treatment plan to disseminate and customise to use with your own Adult Adoptee Clients. You will also receive a Reading List containing some of the seminal writing and latest research into Psychotherapy with Adoptees. Trainers: Susie Hewitt is an Adult Adoptee herself, and has worked with those touched by Adoption for over a decade. She is also a Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst. She has an MSc in TA Psychotherapy (Middlesex Uni) and is registered and accredited as a psychotherapist and supervisor with both UKCP and BACP. She has run a Private Practice in North Manchester since 2009.
Michelle Hyams-Ssekasi is a trained Social Worker and UKCP Registered Psychotherapist who is OFSTED registered to provide Adoption Psychotherapy for Child Adoptees and their families in the North West of England. She worked for over two decades for the NSPCC and is both a Child & Adolescent and Adult Registered Psychotherapist with both BACP and UKCP. A Provisional Teaching & Supervising Transactional Analyst, she has a wealth of clinical experience in working with those touched by adoption. This workshop carries CPD credits (particularly for those in TA Training who must count hrs with a PTSTA or TSTA trainer).
